ELINOR CARUCCI
When Ginsburg joined the Supreme Court in 1993, she was not the only woman: Sandra Day O’Connor became a friend, and Ginsburg lamented her loss in 2006. In their first group photograph together, the two wore collars that feminized – or at least personalized the otherwise imposingly impersonal black robes. This collar, with pleats and floral motif, was among her most feminine and traditional – a cautious choice for a Justice just starting out.
