ELINOR CARUCCI
This delicate floral design was featured in Ginsburg’s 2000 portrait, as well as portraits in 2003, 2009, and 2010. Lace is a symbol of refinement and dignity – English law prohibited lower classes from wearing lace under Queen Elizabeth I, and early American colonies had similar proscriptions. Its presence in juridical attire was traditional in men’s costumes, but it has taken on the tradition of symbolic adornment in contemporary fashion. Many have decorated with lace, but few have become so identified with the lace jabot as the Notorious RBG.
