ELINOR CARUCCI
When Ginsburg died in 2020, opera houses across the country dimmed their lights: Ginsburg, along with her frenemy Antonin Scalia, was a famous opera enthusiast, turning to the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Washington National Opera for “respite . . . All work and no play makes the judge a dull person.” More than just watching from her box, Ginsburg appeared on stage in non-speaking roles at least a half-dozen times, and was herself the subject of a comic opera by composer Derrick Wang, Scalia/Ginsburg (2015). After Plácido Domingo appeared as the title role in Verdi’s Stiffelio in a clerical jabot in 2010, the Metropolitan Opera House costume designer gave the present collar, a replica of Domingo’s, to Ginsburg.
