The J. Paul Getty Museum has acquired three photographs from Maisel’s Desolation Desert series. The series, aerial images of massive mining facilities in Chile’s fragile Atacama Desert, was supported by the artist’s 2018 Guggenheim Fellowship. The three photographs acquired by the Getty depict a series of interlinked tailings ponds from a copper mining complex; Maisel has likened them to Robert Motherwell’s Elegies for a Spanish Republic.
These photographs are included in the Getty Museum’s exhibition The Expanded Landscape, on view from June 29 – October 20, 2021.
